MEMA uses volunteers in many functions like radio operators for significant events like hurricane and other weather events, as well as any other emergencies that involve the citizens of Massachusetts. RACES stands for Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services and is managed by FEMA (the Feds). Terry oversees the people who manage to process all communications (via radio, telephone and fax) in the MEMA Region 1 Headquarters in Tewksbury, MA.
The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program helps train people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities. When emergencies happen, CERT members can give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims, and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with non-emergency projects that help improve the safety of the community. Terry is a CERT instructor in the region managing the email and internet services for the various teams.
PART is a ARRL Special Service affiliated club that provides easy access through a series of amateur radio services to local public safety departments for all ham radio operators throughout the region. Terry has been the President of this club on and off since he joined 20+ years ago.
Being as we live in a condo, external antennas are restricted in size as you can imagine. Terry does most of this activities while driving around in his Chevy Blazer.
